Stop Borrowing Energy – 3 Simple Ways to Break the Afternoon Slumps Without Coffee
There is something about your afternoon caffeine hit. A mixed feeling of power and hopelessness.
You know you can rely on a coffee boost to perform right through the middle of the day,
but….
You regret it at 10 pm when the boosting effect shows up, uninvited to the sleep party.😞
And that’s because you borrow energy you cannot repay.
The more you rely on it,
the less you trust your natural energy to carry you through.
You know you shouldn’t jeopardise your sleep, but at 3 PM, you give in again.
And this is deeply ingrained in one of the most common productivity myths:
The belief that you should be responsive and sharp 100% all the time.
Caffeine then seems the simplest and quickest way to keep up.
To make things worse, every time you walk past the coffee machine, it reminds you of the opportunities for social connections and informal chats you love.
Where is the door back in control?
✔️ The door that keeps your energy steady and your sleep sound
✔️ The door that makes you feel confident to show up at any time
✔️ The door that gives you energy for life after work without compromising on sleep
In this blog post, I will
Help you understand how the caffeine patterns show up in midlife
Offer you an "energy ladder" to stay away from your coffee habit and revive your sleep
Dive into the emotional layers of your coffee ritual - because let's face it, emotions are involved. So, better get straight in the right direction
The Caffeine Loop: Why Your Energy Debt Keeps Growing
Caffeine double hits your brain.
Caffeine blocks adenosine — the signal your brain uses to tell you you’re tired.
Less adenosine building means you feel less tired. Great! That’s exactly why you reach for the coffee machine.
But…
When bedtime comes, without adenosine build-up, it takes ages to fall asleep and once you do, the quality of your sleep is affected.
You spend less time sleeping and less time in slow-wave sleep (deep sleep)>
Your brain doesn’t process the clean-up it requires to feel rested and sharp.
And when you try to go to bed early, sleep falls short.
Because the caffeine story has disrupted your natural circadian rhythms.
While sleep affects more than one in every two menopausal women, you don’t want to add oil to the fire.
Research shows that the hormonal shifts already disrupt your circadian rhythm and increase your nighttime awakenings.
As you sleep less, you rely more on caffeine midday.
Your brain builds tolerance to the hit.
You end up needing more caffeine shots to achieve the same level of alertness.
It’s time to break the loop!
Renee was following everything to the letter, but couldn’t get out of a long, tiring day. She was going to sleep past midnight, waking up groggy and pushing through her days. She had to call her family on the other side of the world, and the best time (for them) was after 10 pm. She relied on 4 coffees a day, two mid-afternoon.
She was masking the fatigue and was wide awake for the call at midnight.
Once we discussed the timing of her coffee, the real meaning of her coffee break, and the revamp of the family calls according to her agenda, she was able to switch gears and find her energy without needing her daily caffeine.
If you are thinking, coffee is the only thing that gets you through the afternoons, that makes complete sense right now.
Coffee does give you a temporary lift.
But you only borrow energy from later by blocking your natural fatigue signals.
You don’t address the reasons why you feel the crash in the first place.
Which is why the crash always comes back.
Fix the Leaks Before You Chase Energy
Yes, it all starts by plugging your energy leaks.
And to do so, I’ve seen countless women focusing on the 20% flashy options – supplements, biohacks, trends – ignoring the 80% fundamentals.
These 80% fundamentals are not glamorous.
But they are ready for you, fully available and mostly ignored.
As I keep saying, they are simple but not easy.
Let‘s take an example.
When fatigue comes, your hydration is fundamental.
Nearly all the women I meet are not there yet, mildly dehydrated day in and day out.
If you rely on tea or coffee to stay hydrated, it’s time to change this option.
Because your energy ladder starts with every regular sip of water you have throughout the day.
With every sip,
👌 Your brain gets more oxygen delivered, so you stay cognitively performant and focused
👌 You get more nutrients into your cells, so your mitochondria – the powerplant in every single cell – produce more energy.
👌 More cellular energy also means better detoxification, so you feel less sluggish
👌 And you also boost your physical performance, which means more muscle for better metabolic balance.
That’s why hydration matters so much during menopause.
Because you cannot afford to add fatigue to fatigue.
As your hormones change, your metabolism shifts, and while your body adapts, you need to ensure optimum energy.
This is where the fundamentals come in.
Don’t rely on thirst to get hydrated. Create a habit of sipping water throughout the day instead.
As you age, your thirst sensation naturally diminishes.
When you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.
Does something like sipping water throughout the day actually make a difference in your energy?
Yes 💫
It’s simple (not easy), and it's about micro changes for maximum effects.
The exact shifts we forget easily as life takes over.
That’s why, in the Fasting Lifestyle System, we are diving into neuroplasticity – to make change easier, building on small, repeatable signals.
Hydration, breath, movement, and nervous system regulation are not small things for your body.
They are the foundation of your daily energy.
Now, if you ask me how many glasses of water per day you need?
The answer is in your body whispers.*
Your body shows you the way before full-blown symptoms. And learning to hear those signals is very liberating.
Dark urine or going to the bathroom only twice a day are sure signs you are dehydrated.
And when you feel tired?
Have a glass of water.
Hydration may be the answer for more energy.
It’s Not Just Coffee
3 PM – Your double shot in hand.
You are confident you will get through the afternoon with this subtle ‘high’ feeling.
BUT caffeine can become the silent killer of your success.
Research suggests that its psychostimulant effect can intensify your emotional responses to negative situations, and induce anxiety, agitation, irritability.
That’s not the best ground to interact with the team at work and family at home.
Your caffeine hit ends up fanning the flame of an already emotional system under stress.
Beyond the caffeine hit, you also often end up longing for the coffee break:
💬For the talk with your colleagues,
🫸To justify a pause to yourself
🚶♀️➡️To have a walk you would forget otherwise.
You think about your bad nights, try to be good, but your deeper needs quietly take over.
Your unconscious, valid need for rest and comfort melts away in your decision to reach for coffee in the afternoon.
Breaking your midday caffeine hit is not only about overcoming your body's cravings,
it’s also about acknowledging the deeply ingrained emotions behind the cravings.
In the past 10 years, I observed so many women jumping to the fourth step of the ladder, forgetting about the first three.
➡️They force through it, got results, but results don’t last.
When come to caffeine, they either tell me:
“I can’t get by without my coffee”
Or they go cold turkey, end up with headaches, feel frustrated, push through and succumb again in a few weeks.
The first step is not to cut coffee blankly. It is to ground your energy and calm your nervous system.
From that safe and grounded place, you can recognise the emotions behind your choices and change habits peacefully.
I’ve built a ladder for you. To pacify your brain, calm your body and step forward quietly and peacefully.
This is where we shift from understanding… to action.
It looks like this:
🪜 You Step Away
🪜 You Hydrate
🪜 You Move
🪜 You Breathe
🪜And You Check In.
It’s calledthe 2PM CORE Reset.
A simple ritual to reconnect with your body, restore your energy and shift out of stress without caffeine.
If you think you need a break, not another task, the 2PM CORE Reset doesn’t remove the break, it upgrades it.
“This sounds good… but I probably won’t stick to it”
Maybe part of you is thinking you like the idea but you don’t see how you will make it last in your busy life.
And that’s where the reframe happens.
Your mid-afternoon ritual is not about discipline.
It’s about perception.
Coffee may seem the only and simplest option right now.
But when you start on something simple, repeatable that makes you feel better, it becomes easier to ingrain it into your agenda.
The goal isn’t to remove your afternoon break.
It’s to stop borrowing energy… and start restoring it.
Once your body feels supported – through hydration, breath, movement and awareness – you no longer need to rely on quick fixes to get you through the day
💫 You start to trust your energy again.
And that changes everything.
If this resonates with you and you’re ready to move beyond short-term solutions,
I’d love to support you.
